Using Automated Testing Tools One day
Test automation has not lived up to its promise for many organisations. The promise was unattended test runs which would increase test execution productivity and coverage. The reality has been frustration and expensive test tools gathering dust as shelfware. Test automation is a difficult thing to do and should not be embarked upon lightly. This course is aimed at practitioners and will examine all of the different approaches to automated testing and what they have to offer. It will start with the basics then move on to advanced test automation architectures and will provide all the information you will need to get real benefits out of software test automation.

Objectives:

Intended for: Anyone actually using, or planning to use commercially available, 'script based' tools (e.g. WinRunner, Visual Test, QARun, Rational ROBOT, QA Partner, etc) in order to create automated tests. The material will benefit all test automation practitioners from beginners to advanced

Key points

How the Tools work: How do the various types of tool work? Types of test tool. History of the tools. Script based tools (including a demonstration of various tools). Playing actions back to the system under test. Creating actions.

Key Automation Issues: What are the main factors in making test automation successful? Factors important to the choice of the tool. Object recognition. Test Language features. The importance of maintenance. Testing your tests.

A Structured Approach to Test Automation: What architectural approach should we take? Reasons for new approaches. Automated Test Creation Methods. Record/playback. Script Translation. Data Driven. A Software Engineering approach. Key Ratios.

Advanced Automation Methods: Advanced Architectures. Moving the navigation out of the scripts. Frameworks. Business Object Level Architectures. Screen/window level architectures. Automation is based upon a model of the system under test.
Please note that this is not a hands-on course. However delegates are advised that a visit to the Tools Fair on the Thursday will complement the course and give them the opportunity to see the tools that are featured.
